How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home

October 13, 2019 by Garlic Girl Leave a Comment

I’m not a fan of sugary, pumpkin-spice lattes found in coffee houses like Starbucks. Admittedly, they sound appealing when you want something on-the-run on chilly, fall mornings, but they’re not for me with all the added powders, emulsifiers, sugars and whatever else. No thanks. Taking a few extra minutes to make them at home is way better – and way easier – than you think.

There are many ways to make lattes at home, and probably endless ways to make a pumpkin spice latte, but I happen to think my way is really good because it’s very easy, and the lattes come out extra thick and frothy without a lot of extra steps.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Tips

It important to start with brewing a really good fresh cup of coffee or espresso. My favorite way to make coffee at home is to use an Italian cappuccino maker called a Bialetti. But a good pour-over or French press is perfectly fine. And of course the beans matter, but that’s a whole other topic!

  • Use simple pumpkin puree. I used unsweetened, canned. There’s no need to even think about making your own.
  • If you love ginger, it’s extra delicious to add a squeeze of fresh, but powdered is just fine.
  • To froth the milk, I use an inexpensive milk frother that costs just a few dollars from IKEA. If you don’t have one, you can shake your steamed milk.
  • Heat your milk on the stovetop – it’s just always better than the microwave. Don’t let the milk boil. If microwaving, don’t overheat – just 30 seconds is all you need.
  • Use a glass mug – you can see the lovely layers and the nice pumpkin color.

Sip and Enjoy

It’s about to be a busy time of year for many of us with the holidays, sports, school functions, but it’s a good idea to take time to rest.

The past few days were filled with celebrating my daughter’s birthday and there was a LOT of cooking (including this eggplant parmigiana), driving all back-and-forth, and just running around. When I arrived home last night, I make a plan to rest today. And that’s how this little pumpkin-spice latte happened.

I actually sat down with a little blanket on the couch and watched The Great British Baking Show and just sipped and sipped. What a little treat. The latte was so good, I wanted to share it with you.

Enjoy!
